what's a little heat?

I had an exceedingly good day yesterday.
Woke up to meet up the Maze-rs and
mangosteen at True Grounds, where I found out the reason they only do scrambled eggs is because they're adulterated. grrrr. So, I just had bacon. I picked up another copy of The Weekly Dig crossword, which I'd left at Chez Uz the night before, and rapidly filled in the ones from the night before, misleading people into thinking I am a phenomenal puzzler. To illustrate how much this is not true, I simply could not think of a 4-letter word meaning "male deer" other than Buck... until today. Stag. No one else was awake enough to get it either. Nonetheless, it was a lot of fun doing a group crossword. Lately, I've been hitting True Grounds just to read the Sunday funnies. But I may have to add in more puzzles, especially if I have company.

Drove out with the Pope, who was endlessly entertaining. I don't know what percentage objectively genuine to percentage of my never really getting over my college interest in him (only mr. [dr. pretentious] was willing to even ask about that). However, the part about how their camp in mongolia suffered from a flash flood, watching the typical-westerner digging though several feet of mud in search of his tent and other belongings, pulling out a tattered copy of The Worst Case Scenario Handbook and muttering pathetically "it's not in here"? Definitely funny. The snickering over the neophytes trying to adopt waterlogged marmots, completely unaware that they can be carriers of bubonic plague? Perhaps that's because the Pope and I both have a bit o' the heartlessness.
The rest of the day's driving was by Dr. Pretentious and her natural abilities as a storyteller. And I just can't match her delivery. You'll just have to get to know her yourself.

Finally, Zarf made it to the MegaMaze!
The western theme resulted in many of the bridges being styled as "covered wagons", allowing us to get wind and shade. Since the 94 degree weather kept the crowds down, we were also able to stay on the bridges long enough to cool off. The under-bridge misters that made me shiver in fear in October are heavensent in August.
The thing about heat is, people notice. You get dehydrated, hypoglycemic, tired, etc. when the weather is cool, but you aren't as aware of it. You're not constantly drinking water, or other cold refreshments, trying to replace salt, etc. People got moody and restless, but not noticably moreso than they do in October. Yesterday, we knew it was heat and extertion, rather than wonder if the company was getting on our nerves.
Aaron, Nate and I went back in to be completist, and get missed bridges. We finished that second run before others completed their first.
Then to Kimball farm, where I flagrantly cheated on my diet with their smallest portion of ice cream, which is about the size of my head, at least for that 30 seconds before it starts melting rapidly. The Pope and I wanted to play minigolf, but our companions were clearly too fried.
The problem with going home is, it wasn't air-conditioned either. But we lay there a bit, drinking water, and eating cold tomatoes with salt and vinegar, until we summoned the energy to make a plan.
Dinner, with A/C, salads, and no waiting. Nate and I had coupons for Ruby Tuesdays (noted for how quickly they adapted their menu for South Beach Dieters). Afterwards to Hero. I'm not sure if it was more playing Big Aisle, Small Cart or so recently seeing the Kill Bills, but it was So Over The Top. Turns out Quentin exec'd Hero too. I should've known. Except his usual gore budget went almost entirely to art direction.
It is so unfair
that I do not have asian hair.
Just sayin'

Back home, Dr. P mentioned that, in college, most of Campus Patrol thought we were lovers. (!) This might explain why my semi-conscious attempt at passing myself off as gay to get the boys to work harder completely backfired. It seemed to work for EVERY OTHER STRAIGHT WOMAN ON CAMPUS. I'd always wondered what I'd done wrong.
But no,
roozle I didn't lose much sleep over it... once I was done laughing.
Alas but for the days of yore! Truly.
I wish I could spend more time with my college friends. A lot of my context obviously formed around then. They get me in ways nobody else does. Although, I suppose, so do my gang of SCAdians, or my gang of Ninnies, or Rabbits, or my relatives, etc., but, I just haven't been "understood" en masse on my college level in a long time. I am really looking forward to Uz's wedding.
