Other than from folks in the
freescreenings community, have any of you heard of Napoleon Dynamite?
This movie seems to be marketing itself solely by free screenings. At tonight's screening (which was not the local premiere by far), we were offered more movie passes (for a matinee tomorrow, which I've since handed off to
cgull), and for next Tuesday night, comment if interested), T-shirts (the only XL's were "Summer"-themed, which will be good for next winter), buttons, stickers, and lip balm.
After watching the film, I understand why. Trailers and posters would be inadequate or too spoiler-y. Somewhere between Welcome to the Dollhouse and Revenge of the Nerds, with a dollop of Rushmore and a dash of What's Eating Gilbert Grape? Now that I think about it, for the art alone: Better off Dead and One Crazy Summer. Teen angst meets art house.
Hence, worth seeing, even if you eventually conclude you don't like it. The opening credits alone are a treat.
novalis, who turned up in the seat in front of me (how long did I look at his fairly unique hair before I figured that out?) seemed ambivalent. A good bit of the humor was too mocking for his tastes.
hammercock, I think they were
rao and
rhiannonstone.
And yes, Uncle Rico IS played by Jon Gries, a.k.a. Laslo Hollyfeld.
