Demented and Sad, but Social
Dec. 14th, 2002 12:32 amSo, I thought I was going out to party with a secret cache of Non-LJ friends. Such beasts are still out there, maybe.
Met up with one of the Jens at her art school's opening before heading out to see one of the Jennys in Buffy the Vampire Slayer's High School Reunion. Jen was busy networking (while hiding her blonde corkscrew curls under my straight burgundy Devilgirl wig), the rest of us sort of piled up waiting for her. Tried to make conversation with one of them - who seemed too thin, cute and hip to have very much in common with me other than Jen. Not so. Soon I was joking about office spaces and how my monitor can be seen from the elevator.
"Well, I only really load one or two pages at work."
"Yeah, mostly my friends page."
(!)
Broke out into a fit of LJ Bonding. Aw! We're sopathetic cute!
Although I haven't seen an episode of Buffy, enough of you discuss it, in person or on here, that I got a sufficient number of the in-jokes. Definitely An Hoot, as my old SCA pals would've said. Which is relevant because
talonvaki is not only also a recovering SCAdian, but a recovering SCAdian Chronicler (Newsletter editor), just like me. Only she gets to be a Gemini Snake, which I always wanted to be. (I remember reading Linda Goodman's Sunsigns in junior high and wishing I could be a gemini -- like all my friends. Aries, bleh. I grew up being the baby of the family and found out I was doomed to be the baby of the Zodiac too.)
It served to help remind me somewhat of the difference between Scadians and Fen. Scadians tend to be bigger patrons of the arts, and on average can fit into maintstream society with a little more ease. Mainly because there are such rules of chivalry, etiquette, or, I dunno, a social awareness that many geeks lack. Not every SCAdian is into Star Trek and BDSM, and many would be uncomfortable talking about either. Then again, there are higher percentages of tech information & connectivity junkies at Pennsic than at Burning Man.
I ponder all this now, since being recently
roozled onto the Arisia panel: Pennsic to Burning Man to World Con. If you have relevant comments or questions, or want to catch me before I pattern-match myself into a swamp, lemme know.
