She suggests that giving this much (selflessly) to whatever counts as your spiritual organization, will only earn you good karma. Atheists can break this down into the psychological well-being of feeling like part of the solution. The resulting positive outlook will draw more positive input. She suggests she worries more when not titheing. I'm not sure.

If you don't have money, donate time or goods. Right when I was first about to write this, I was brought into a 1 pm meeting I'd entirely spaced, and handed a flyer about City Year volunteer needs.

Other than volunteering, which I should do more often, my tithes tend to be in support of established environmental groups and arts organizations. A friend of mine sets aside $500 a year to invest in 1 or 2 pieces of art. An honorable goal, but not for this year's budget. Hell, that wouldn't even get me one of Jeff Smith's Metal book/mirrors. Should I even mention the SOFA show Momma saw in Chicago this weekend?
