the best part about this film was...

• it was free?
  
• just imaging the anachronarcs in SCAdia going ballistic?
  
• just imaging the (modern) Xians going ballistic?
  
• Legolas disguised as Aragorn?
  
• afterwards getting to see people outside offering $150 for a single ticket to the Serenity screening?
  

I had been vaguely hoping there'd be the reverse, people offering unclaimed Serenity tickets. I would've been morally obliged to do my part to make sure it was a full house. :)

Although that would've required blowing off a birthday concert. That turned out to be decent, except for that one act that resonated exactly like a dental drill during a root canal. This is from someone (me) who enjoys Einstuerzende Neubauten. Live. Don't care how cute last night's act might've been to watch.

Although, it did give me something to talk about with Sinus Brady and Mascara dude. I went to almost all of his Lizard Lounge showcases, but he only remembers the time when everyone (else) showed up to see Amanda Palmer. shrug

Decordova and White Noise

lacking sufficiently solid plans, I went to the decordova opening reception tonight.

I probably would've pimped it more if I'd known for certain that it was free, and known in advance I'd be raving about any of the artists. (They've recently started charging for parking. Even if the museum admission was still waived during openings, I wasn't sure about getting into the park.) As it turns out, for openings, it's All Free! If you're unsure about the Decordova (you artless bum!), then arrive at their receptions as soon as they begin, when it's still light enough to enjoy the park for free as well.

As to those artists I didn't know I'd be raving about:
Jean Blackburn takes just enough bits from household goods to retain Gestalt, and expand it beyond itself. Really spiffy.
Barbara Takenaga does detailed abstracts that gave me a strong sense of I could do this... but I don't, enough that I might just try to overtly imitate her work just to get myself to make anything...
Sally Moore does hanging assemblage similar to Sarah Sze, much smaller scale. Very much reminded me of the floating island sequence in my college RPG, and I had fun mentioning this to Sally once I realized we went to the same college. I probably drove her nuts, because I kept coming back to her stuff and gushing about it.

Afterwards, I did a drive-by in Kendall to see any of the cyberarts. I found white noise white light in front of Kresge, which premiered at the Athens Olympics last summer. An hour later I managed to pry myself away. It's there through Sunday night. Don't miss this. Wow.
