our team results:
SAT:
time trial
(heat 6) 02:18.19 3rd of 6.
quarter final
(heat 23) 02:21.28 6th of 6.
SUN:
(visitor's finals, we didn't qualify, so... we got to sleep in!)
semi final
(heat 69) 02:23.40 6th of 6.
final
(heat 82) 02:33.68 6th of 6.
Note: race speed can vary greatly with wind & current conditions. This can be enormously demoralizing. Our earliest heat is usually our time trial, after which we'll be placed with more competitive teams. So, even though it will be our worst feeling race (our timing was off, people are adjusting to the host's boats, etc.) it is sometimes the fastest raw time. This is why some races rely on time trials, and some rely more on placement in the heat. It's hard to really know which way is less unfair.
In SF, we had one time trial chance, then, after that, it was placement. Also, there was a huge discrepancy between lanes. (There usually is, once again, due to currents, difference in water depth depending on distance from shore, etc.) Lane 1 was almost always 1st and Lane 6 rarely finished above 4th in any race. Bad luck meant our time trial landed us in lane 5. We never recovered.
Our hosts, KP, were awesome. The weather was unseasonably pleasant. I never had to get into
frotz 's pants. Alas for the lost amusing narrative there, but, yay for not being hypothermic.
Amusingly, most of the out of town teams were in the Marquis, along with a big chunk of visitors for Folsom Fair, which I might've visited had I not been exhausted from so much paddling. (o: They would've loved all the "paddler only" signs at the race site.
It took me a while to figure out that Tide & Paddled were ours, and not theirs. Black uniform, with a hefty side order of derby dame couture. They had matching studded collars and most of them raced in their docs. (They won their division, a few below us... But still had a better final time than ours.)
I'm back. I'm jetlagged. I feel like crap. I felt like crap most of the trip. I think it was mostly jetlag. And, vacation eating, perhaps. And, not packing suitable clothing for a heatwave. But I got to see some folks, got at least one native to Treasure Island and its stellar views for the first time, and a few more touristy bits of SF. So, it was good overall.
