ok, so I'm retarded.
negativland's show starting early and relatively on time was a fluke for the mideastclub. somehow I forgot this.
I skipped my 6-8 dragonboat practice because some part of my addled brain thought that doors at 8 meant band at 8. For some reason, I thought the mideastclub site listed the band in the order they went onstage, not headliner and opening acts.
Even if O'Death had been the opening act, they wouldn't've hit the stage before 9:45. Tonight is the first time in a while that the club can stay open til 2 on Thursdays, so as the headliners, they didn't hit the stage until 11:45. And, well, they really are hobocore. They were already drinking by the time I got there... before 8. I wasn't sure it was worth missing the last train home to watch them deal with the drummer slowly destroy his entire kit. The fiddleplayer's bow was in band enough condition that even I noticed it, although his playing still sounded good. It was a certain kind of amusing that the feedback problems all stemmed from the banjo/uke player. Imagine an electric ukelele. Now imagine getting feedback from such a beast.
The last two songs I could stay for sounded like they were beginning to hit their stride, but, I really wasn't prepared for cabfare or getting home after 2 am. Next time, I'll try to research it better so I can see the whole set.
On the other hand, the mix-up meant I got to see The Devil Makes Three. And they were awesome.
