Simonetta Vespucci
Nov. 25th, 2005 04:05 pm(Per dinner discussion last night.)
Wikipedia has nothing on her, sadly.
According to a cursory web search, she was either the blood sister of Amerigo, or a distant cousin by marriage. She was the lover of several Medici, at least one of whom was very publically killed. I find no reference to support my art history prof's assertion that she was killed with him, in the middle of high mass, on Easter Sunday. (You get away with a lot when the Pope is your illegitimate cousin.) She appears to have died of something like consumption in her early to mid-20s.
DaVinci definitely painted her portrait, but apparently, it is just rumor that she modelled for Botticelli.
but, to really verify anything, I'd have to find more reliable sources than web pages. Ha HA!
