Ooooo, I remember being so excited to see Willy Wonka in Blazing Saddles!

The original movie, Willie Wonka and the Chocolate Factory was my first exposure to the story. It likely differs from the books, which I've never read. (The only Dahl I've read is, in fact, erotica, loaned by [livejournal.com profile] treacle_well, who may just want it back someday.) I suspect the new movie probably follows them more closely (which allowed for some surprise plot changes). Well, except for the oompa loompa. All one of him, and his heavy metal guitarrrr solo, and his complete failure to look like Ronald McDonald gone horribly wrong.

The written Mr. Wonka was likely a source inspiration for the persona of Michael Jackson, not the other way around. Nonetheless, Depp's Wonka gives me the willies something fierce. (Jackson mixed with liberal doses of Mr. Rogers and the Church Lady and Bob Ross. It's just Not Right.)

I felt my childhood being amputated. Then again, the modernization of the characters is apt. No snozzberries or fizzylifting or eating the dishes, but, no "cheer up charlie" either, which has to be +5000 pts right there.

If you didn't watch the first film ritualistically at least once a year since birth, aiding and abetting your chocoholism, you're going to love this film. Just love it. (Otherwise... well, you'll still love it, but you'll feel violated at the same time, which rather goes with the concept of Wonka being disturbed, and not merely eccentric.)
