cthulhia: (devilgirl)
(other than her spiffy red boots... o sorry, not that Autumn...)

However, today is the first day of fall. Peak of equinox was this morning, so not the first full day, which makes a difference for some.

You know what that means, at least around here. Yes, apples. (And not just drooling over [livejournal.com profile] zodmicrobe's new mac hardware...)

SBB provides a baked apple recipe. A similar (and illustrated) one is here. During the search, I also found one that would allow [livejournal.com profile] treacle_well to use up all those cinnamon candies she wouldn't otherwise eat. (Although I rather hope she didn't bother to take them with her when she moved.)

Not sure this would be an ideal use for my Macouns, I also found the mother of all charts and guides to apple varieties. To sum up: you have to eat the result, so pick apples you like.

Then again, a weekend of sleep deprivation in recirculated air has developed into a cold. No harm in eating several macouns at day, cooked or raw. The latter, alas, with a knife. My current bout of dental terror will prevent me from a proper crunchy bite out of any macouns this year.

She also suggests a mulled cider with both alcohol ("Calvados" -- apparently some sort of brandy) and butter. A lot of recipe variety, I picked one for the Harry Potter references.

I had fantasies yesterday morning of apples, onions and melted cheese on toast, but I've since congested enough without adding dairy. (If that dairy theory gets debunked, then my reaction may be entirely psychosomatic at this point. The web is a war zone of disagreement over this, and you risk seeing a mailing list called "my body his temple", so don't look it up. A good portion of the qualified support notes that butter and cheese are usually not a problem, but, I'll wait. Even Macouns should be in season for longer than I expect to have this cold.)
