BUFF report 9.1: dante's surf

So, wild enthusiasm got me out to see Dante's Inferno, which could definitely be this year's weird-ass BUFF film, except that it's "mainstream indy" enough to have won something at Slamdance. And, well, I often have a fondness for things that even the kids in Winnepeg find a little bizarre.

It's current enough that in a few years it might be dated, but, I have no idea about the staying power of our era's big villains. I was tempted to ask if they're selling any of the puppets, including the one who didn't have a functioning mouth, but had independently moving breasts -- from the second circle of hell. (But, if I'm buying any art right now, it's that painting with the fishtank at Underbones, and, well, I just got my brakes done...)

Some of the meta-commentary (i.e., characters complaining about puppets) might make this a good pairing with The Thief and the Cobbler (i.e. "who built this place?")

In classic BUFF form, the movie started late, an hour behind schedule. Heck, that may be a new record in my many years of BUFFing.

Afterwards, we headed over to House of Blues Doyles for the Dewar's party and a background shorts screening. I completely forgot there'd be a band playing. They turned out to be a totally dancable surf-style band who also happened to enjoy jamming in front of videos of people slicing brains. "Need a refill on the Scotch... and the brains!" Shame [profile] hahathor's off puzzling this weekend, else I'd drag her out to the next show, at tomorrow's BUFF party. They don't have another local gig scheduled after that. Sigh.
